A securely enclosed garden is the feature dog owners filter for above almost any other — and the one self-catering listings are vaguest about. "Enclosed garden" gets typed into the marketing copy whether it means a fully fenced lawn or a courtyard with a gap by the gate. So this page does the thing those listings won't: it gathers every cottage we've verified as having a genuinely enclosed garden, and tells you, for each, exactly what "enclosed" means.

Where it's a fully secure lawn, we say so; where it's a paved courtyard, a gappy boundary or a garden by a brook, we say that instead. How to read an "enclosed garden" claim

After reading enough listings to know which language holds up, three things separate a genuinely secure garden from one that just gets called enclosed.

"Fully enclosed" or "dog-secure", not just "enclosed". The specific wording matters. A listing that commits to "fully enclosed" or "secure" has usually thought about the dog; one that says only "enclosed garden" may mean a low wall, a gappy hedge or a courtyard. We lead each entry with the actual wording.

Lawn vs courtyard. A paved courtyard can be perfectly secure, but it's not the same as grass for a dog that wants to stretch out — and several "gardens" on the booking platforms are exactly this. Where ours is a courtyard, the garden note says so.

What's on the other side of the fence. The catch that catches people out: a fully fenced garden that backs onto a river, a lane or a field gate. We flag the cottages by water or with a boundary caveat — fenced, but worth supervising — rather than waving them through.

If a secure boundary is non-negotiable for your dog, the safest move is still a two-minute call to the owner to confirm fence height and any gaps before you book. This page gets you to the right shortlist; the call closes it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an enclosed garden matter so much for a dog?
It's the difference between a relaxing stay and a vigilant one. A securely enclosed garden means you can open the door and let the dog out — first thing, last thing, in the rain — without a lead, without watching for a road or an open gate, and without the dog bolting after a sheep. For a recall-iffy dog, an anxious one, or a new rescue, it's often the single most important feature of the whole booking.
Does "enclosed garden" always mean fully secure?
No — and this is exactly what most listings gloss over and we don't. "Enclosed" can mean a fully fenced lawn, but it can also mean a paved courtyard rather than grass, a boundary with a gap by the gate, or a garden that backs onto a (fenced, but present) river or brook. Every cottage below states what its enclosure actually is, caveats included. Read that line before you book, and if a secure boundary is critical, confirm the fence height and any gaps with the owner.
Can I let my dog off the lead in the garden?
On the genuinely fully-enclosed ones, yes — that's the point of them. On the ones we've flagged with a caveat (a courtyard, a gappy boundary, a nearby waterway), treat it as supervised rather than off-lead-and-forget. We don't lump those in silently; the garden note on each entry tells you which is which.
Are enclosed-garden cottages more expensive?
Not as a rule — a secure garden isn't a premium feature the way a hot tub is, so you're mostly paying the normal regional rate plus the standard dog supplement (£20–£40 per stay is typical, hidden until checkout on Sykes and cottages.com). The harder part is availability rather than price: genuinely secure-garden cottages get booked early by the people who specifically need them.

Against the listing's own description and photos rather than the search facets, which routinely overstate. Where the listing is explicit ("fully enclosed", "dog-secure garden") we say so; where it's a courtyard or has a caveat, we say that instead; and where enclosure isn't actually stated, the cottage doesn't appear on this page at all.
