Somewhere to clean the dog and stow the wet kit before it reaches the carpet. The gold standard is a dedicated dog-wash station — a low shower with warm water, sometimes a dryer and towels. Short of that, an outdoor hose, a boot room or a hard-floored utility does the job. In the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales especially, this matters more than any welcome hamper: a fell or riverside walk produces a genuinely filthy dog, and a cottage with nowhere to deal with it makes for a tense week.
Which cottages have an actual dog-wash station?

It's rarer than you'd hope; most cottages that are good for muddy dogs offer an outdoor hose or a boot room rather than a full wash station. Is an outdoor hose enough in winter?
It depends on you and the dog. A cold-water outdoor hose in January is workable for a short-coated, water-tolerant dog and a quick rinse, less so for a shivering whippet or a deep wash. For winter trips, lean towards the cottages with an indoor boot room, a heated utility or a proper dog-wash rather than a hose alone — we note which is which.
Do these cottages provide towels for the dog?
